Receiving rave reviews, Soulless, is a swashbuckling zombie tale. With Soulless book reviews that include words like: “Soulless grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the very last page”, you know that you are in for a creepy read. Suggestions are that you sleep with the lights on while reading this book! It chronicles the emergence of zombies from a large graveyard in New York City.
It is hard to believe that this was an organized event! The catastrophe is initiated by a live broadcast of a séance on an early morning breakfast television network in New York. The three mediums intended to open the gateway between the living and the dead for only a short time and within a three hundred mile radius. This was supposed to give the dead one last chance to send a final message to their living loved ones. Except no-one spotted the obvious flaw in the plan.
What seemed like a perfectly kind and thoughtful way to bring peace to the mourners of the city, became a living nightmare. It all goes horribly wrong and the outcome is that the dead sure do reach out to the living- but only in their quest to eat their flesh! And, as if that isn’t bad enough, these zombies can remember their previous lives and in a crafty way, they can use that information to source what they are after. Crazed, zombified fathers attacking their children is just one example of how gruesome this story gets. They are Soulless.
In the face of all this horror and danger, a small band of heroes decides to tackle the problem of the Zombies head-on, with some interesting and terrifying results. Set in NYC, it gives Golden a rich setting in which to portray the reactions of different groups of people and how they make plans to survive.
This mix of characters: college kids, gangsters, a wannabe young actress and the leaders who came up with the daft idea in the first place, all allow us to see the disaster from different perspectives. But they all have one thing in common – the desire to survive at all costs.
Besides being described by readers as “Awesome” in Soulless book reviews, it has something that many books in the zombie genre lack – a credible, unique premise. Golden has done a fabulous job of creating dynamic characters and placing them in exciting, albeit scary scenarios.
The descriptions are written with flair and the addition of riveting dialogue keeps the pace engrossing and thrilling. He knows how to keep readers on the edge of their seats with just enough guts, gore and intelligent writing.
Soulless book does not miss the opportunity to be a cautionary tale as well. Golden uses the ending to remind us that we have all become a little disconnected from what matters. We are on a constant quest to accumulate more of everything and we forget to enjoy every moment in life.
Even when faced with the end of the world, our instincts are to degenerate to the lowest version of ourselves and it takes enormous courage and fortitude to buck the trend.
This is definitely an intense and scary book, but Soulless takes you on an adventure that includes the supernatural and flesh-eating Zombies in a fearsome and riveting combination.
